    In an effort to improve the living conditions of the farm people of Utica and the state of Mississippi, William H. Holtzclaw instituted an annual farmers' conference which brought together knowledgeable and successful farm leaders with local farmers. Collection includes programs, speeches, images and posters from conferences over the years.

Booker T. Washington at Vicksburg

In 1908, Booker T. Washington traveled by private rail car to sites throughout Mississippi, including a special visit to Utica to see his protégé William H. Holtzclaw's new school, the Utica Normal and Industrial Institute. Holtzclaw is pictured here (red arrow) with Booker T. Washington (black arrow) and his party in front of the newly dedicated Illinois Memorial at the Vicksburg Military Park.
